Stone Cold

Stone Cold by Pete Hautman

This is my latest read in my quest to find books that especially appeal to our young gentlemen here at BHS.  What caught my attention first was the cover, as a teenager playing poker is a little unusual.  Denn Doyle has always been obsessed with money.  He had his own gardening business as at fifteen, and raked in more money than most teenagers working at fast food joints or the mall.

Short, quick chapters lead you through Denn’s introduction to poker through some less-than-savory high school dropouts he knows from the neighborbood to his realization that he truly has a talent for the game. In fact, he has an obsession with playing poker—not just winning.  He tells his story directly to the readers, and we begin to see that having tons of money doesn’t necessarily make his life perfect.  This fast-paced story is hard to put down, a great choice for that book project that you’ve been putting off doing!
