Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

The story of Of Mice and Men describes the friendship between two men, George and Lennie, and their dream of owning land and having a home.  John Steinbeck plots the setting brilliantly on a Salinas Valley ranch where the two have been working as farm hands.  Their hopes of obtaining their own land are interrupted by new relationships within the farm.  The theme of the story is the failure of a reachable dream due to uncontrollable yet foreshadowed events.  Steinbeck writes this book with a passion and understanding of mankind not seen in many novels.  This book as well as many of Steinbeck’s books is set in California during the 1930’s and describes how people interact with each other.
Overall, this is one of Steinbeck’s best classics as it revolves around the relationships of characters and the results that end in tragedy.
