The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale

Anidori Kiladra Taliana Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree, is special. Not just because of who she is, but because she was born with a word on her tongue. As a child her beloved aunt taught her the speech of the swans and told the tales of the Time Of Creation, when everything had words. But in Kildenree, strange is bad, and the outstanding are shamed.  Ani hides within the confines of her mother’s white marble palace, sheltered and alone. When her father dies, her mother, the beautiful, wise, People-Speaking Queen, announces that Ani will be wedded to the Prince of the greedy neighboring country of Bayern.  it is almost too much for her to bear. All she has ever wanted was her mother’s approval, and now it seems she shall never be given it. Along with her only friends- Selia, her lady in waiting, and Falada, her stallion with whom she shares a special bond- she sets off on the six-moon trip.

But all is not well, and when Selia shows her true colors, the party mutinies, and Ani is left alone, without a drop of water, a scrap of food, or even her own name. She enters Bayern not as the grand Anidori, but as the poor Forest girl, Isi, and there, her true path is to discover who she is beneath the crown and white marble and long, yellow hair.

This breathtaking and heart breakingly beautiful fantasy, based on the tale by the Brothers Grimm, is written as if intertwined with its own Magic, and readers will come to know and love Ani as she learns to live, trust, and love.
