Libraries in California and around the country are being closed in an effort to shore up state budget deficits. Here in Berkeley we are blessed that in 2006, a 10-year measure was approved by almost 80 % of the voters protecting school libraries, music, visual and performing arts , and parent outreach programs, among other programs to enhance student learning.
Remember that libraries teach information literacy, research skills, cyber safety, online database usage, and the love of reading. Studies from sixteen states show that strong school libraries have a measurable impact on student achievement. Please don’t abandon our children when economic times are tough!
