Hogfather by Terry Pratchett (Discworld #20)
When mysterious beings called the Auditors hire Mr. Teatime of the Assassins’ Guild to eliminate the Hogfather, a Santa-like figure, the trouble in Discworld starts. Death himself gets involved, taking on the Hogfather’s job so Hogswatchnight will be saved. Susan, a governess who just happens to be Death’s granddaughter, tracks down the assassin and his accomplices to save the holiday for the children while her grandfather continues delivering presents. Even the wizard professors at Unseen University become part of the story as they prepare for their feast for Hogswatchnight. The characters go in and out of the real world into a place resembling a fairy tale world. If this sounds like a book with off beat humor and a totally imaginative plot that Pratchett makes totally believable, you’re right! I have enjoyed every Terry Pratchett book I’ve read, and look forward to reading all the Discworld titles.
